I LOVE summer reading challenges! They have been a big part of my family’s homeschool for the last several years. A good challenge (especially with prizes!) always encourages my kids to read way more books than they otherwise would. This year, there are some great new options. I can’t wait to tell you all about these excellent summer reading challenges for 2026!
My young readers are always so excited to begin a new summer challenge! Raising kids who love books seems to be increasingly uncommon in this digital age. Fostering a love of literature has been the greatest success in my family’s homeschool journey thus far.
Drumroll… here we go with…
3 Excellent Summer Reading Challenges for 2026
The White House Summer Reading Challenge with the 2nd Lady
This year, Second Lady Usha Vance launched a Summer Reading Challenge for Young Americans! All children in K-8th Grade are invited to join and read 12 books of their choice this summer.
Kids who complete the challenge will receive a certificate and a small prize, and be entered to win a trip to the Nation’s Capital! How exciting is that!
Download the Fillable Tracker and print it for your kids, and they’re off and running. The children can choose their own 12 books, or parents can guide them on what level is acceptable (if your kids are anything like mine, devouring multiple chapter books per day!).

What My 8th Grader is Reading
My eldest son is 13 years old, and for his 12 books I requested that he read classics. He is a voracious reader and goes through most books so fast (more than one book a day), so he needed a bit more of a challenge.
If you’re looking for even more ideas, here’s his full summer reading list from two years ago, at age 11, he read 50+ books and the entire Bible that summer!

There’s a chance that this list could change slightly, but so far, this is his plan. He has half of the books on hand ready to go, and the other half are on their way. All of these titles are new to him, which is great because he re-reads so much of what we own.
Lamplighter Publishing Summer Reading Challenge
This summer reading challenge is my personal favorite! My kids have participated in this for a few summers now. My eldest is already getting started, as he loves this one!
Lamplighter encourages kids (and adults!) to “Grow spiritually, mentally, and creatively as you pursue excellence in the Arts and read great literature from times past!”
Lamplighter Publishing offers quality literature, teaching excellent morals, and “Building Christ-like character one story at a time”.
This year, their summer reading challenge is a little glimpse of what their Summer Guild is like, with weekly bonus challenges in culinary arts, theology, horticulture, visual arts, writing, dramatic arts, craftmanship, business, music design, and photography!
I am so excited about this year’s challenge! It gets better every year. In past years my kids have enjoyed winning E-gift cards each year toward Lamplighter audio books that we put on Yoto cards, as well as gift cards toward their beautiful physical books.

The Rabbit Room Summer Reading Challenge
Here is another exciting summer reading challenge that I just discovered!
The Rabbit Room was founded by author, singer, and songwriter Andrew Peterson, after he visited the Oxford home of C.S. Lewis in 2006. He returned to Nashville with the conviction that “community nourishes good and lasting artistic work – and that creative work nourishes community”.
“The Rabbit Room cultivates and curates story, music, and art to nourish Christ-centered communities for the life of the world.”
To participate in the Rabbit Room 2026 Kids’ Summer Reading Challenge, kids can read books and complete activities through July 31st, 2026 to win a $10 Rabbit Room Store Gift Card.
They have a reading list (some of our favorites are on there, such as the Wilderking Trilogy!) of books worth 20 points, one book worth 50 points, and a few activities plus other books that are worth 10 points. Kids must earn at least 250 points to complete the challenge and win the prize.

Local Library Summer Reading Programs
Always check your local library, as most (if not all) offer a summer reading challenge. I like to layer this with other challenges that we are doing, and the kids have enjoyed getting stickers and entering to win bigger prizes.
One of my favorite ways to use our local library is to order big batches of books through their app. This is because the majority of the titles that I want are not available at our local branch.
When several books are ready, we go in and pick them up. Oh, how quiet and peaceful it is after we come home with a big batch of books! It makes my heart happy to see everyone’s nose in a book, while I sneak away to sew something and listen to a book or podcast myself.
