6 of the Best Knitting Patterns to make for Baby Boys

Knitting for a new baby is always a joy! I’ve heard it said that babies are some of the most “knit-worthy” of all people. That resonated with me because there is something so special about knitting for a new little one on the way. And let’s be honest, hand-knits for a little person are so much faster to make and oh so cute. It can be difficult to find nice patterns to make for boys. I’ve enjoyed knitting for each of my boys over the years, and today I want to share 6 of the best knitting patterns to make for baby boys.

Whether you’re knitting for your own baby, a friend’s baby, or a grandbaby, I hope these pattern suggestions and photos will inspire you when choosing your next project.

#1 the Sea Breeze Romper

The Sea Breeze Romper by Alejandra Graterol might be my favorite pattern that I have knit for a baby boy.

This pattern is very well done; I greatly enjoyed learning how to knit an elastic waistband into a knitted garment! It looks so polished and professional. The pattern begins with the waistband, adding the elastic, and then working down to the hem of the shorts. The way the hems are done looks very professional as well. Next, stitches are picked up along the center front of the shorts and knit upward to make the bib.

The yarn I chose for this romper is Schachenmayr Catania Solids, an inexpensive cotton knit that is super durable. I liked this easy-care yarn and am looking forward to using it again. It held up beautifully to the washing machine, which made it so easy to care for and my baby wore it often.

Here’s a better view of the waistband. I felt so accomplished when I first tried this technique. Doesn’t it look so polished? It was very satisfying to see it come together, and easier to do than I expected.

I enjoyed the Sea Breeze Romper so much that I went on to make a few pairs of just the shorts portion of the pattern. The pairs shown below were knit with Onion Yarn Organic Cotton. These fun shorts got a ton of wear by my baby boy. The little button detail made for a nice finished look.

#2 Newborn Merci Cardigan

Next up is the Merci Cardigan by Frogginette Knitting Patterns. This pattern is free in the newborn size when you sign up for her emails. The larger sizes are available to purchase. Lisa at Frogginette is one of my favorite designers. I have made several of her patterns over the years as well as tested a couple. They are very well written. I knit this little sweater with Malabrigo Rios Aguas yarn. It’s a sweet little wrap cardigan. I love wrap tops and sweaters for tiny babes so I’m not having to pull garments over their little head. My tension was a little bit off from the pattern, so this little sweater fit closer to a 3-month size.

#3 Misha and Puff Popcorn Vest

This sweet Popcorn Vest is by the knitwear designer Misha & Puff. They primarily sell high quality ready-made knitted garments, but they also offer a few knitting patterns! I have enjoyed knitting their popcorn bonnet multiple times. I loved being able to point people to both a store-bought and a DIY version when they complimented my baby’s knits. Before they released their own sweater patterns, I made both a child and an adult popcorn sweater inspired by their designs.

A perfect little gender-neutral knit that looks nice layered over many different outfits.

#4 Miel Cardigan

Another by Lisa at Frogginette Knitting Patterns, the Miel Cardigan has fun textures, and I love the off-set button placket. Miel means “honey”, and the center of this cardigan has a bit of a honeycomb look to it. For this sweater, I used Cascade Yarns Eco Duo which is very cozy for a snuggly new babe. This pattern needs very little finishing work because it is knitted top-down. The size shown below fits a 3-6 month baby.

#5 Tookish Britches

One more by Frogginette Knitting Patterns, because she’s just that good! How sweet are these “Tookish Britches“?! I had the pleasure of testing this pattern, and of I immediately loved the name, inspired by Tolkien’s Hobbits. But they’re also such a classic little boy look! For this pair, I used Quince & Co Whimbrel, which is a nice quality 100% cotton yarn. Another pattern which features a knitted waistband, but this time you knit and insert a drawstring for easy size adjustment. Isn’t there something so cute about little boys in suspender pants?

#6 The Banff Hat

I’m a forever fan of this knitted hat pattern, called Banff by Tin Can Knits. How beautiful is the tree design? I love it so much that I have made it in the baby, toddler, child, and adult sizes! It was my first colorwork project when I made this baby size for my son. My tension wasn’t the greatest, but because it was such a small project I was able to knit it up in a single day. Super comfy and cozy, my version shown below is made from Malabrigo Rios yarn in colorways Aguas and Pearl. Rios has been a favorite of mine for years and I’ve made many other knits with it, such as a popcorn sweater.

I hope this post – 6 of the best knitting patterns to make for baby boys – has been an inspiration to you! I love spending time knitting in anticipation of welcoming a new little one into the world. Dressing a new baby in garments you’ve knit with your own hands is like wrapping them in love and prayers.

Which one of these patterns will you try? Let me know in the comments below.

Do you have another great pattern for baby boys that you would add to this list? I’d love to hear!

I wasn’t lonely and depressed, I just needed to (l I wasn’t lonely and depressed, I just needed to (literally) frolic in a field of daisies.

After being down with laryngitis and a double ear infection, it felt so amazing to get out in the sunshine! I hadn’t left my house in 9 days! I don’t think I’ve ever felt so desperate for sunshine. ☀️ 🌼 🌱

Motherhood can be lonely, especially the first few months after a new baby, and especially during times a sickness! My mind was starting to play tricks on me telling me I have no friends, and reminding me that I have no family nearby.

I’m grateful to God for some encouragement to my heart today, grateful for a phone call that cheered me up, and grateful for the friends who dropped off soup and oranges. And such a timely and sweet package from my sis with her homemade tinctures, sore throat tea, and elderberry syrup kit!

I don’t think daisies have ever looked so beautiful to me as they did today.

It’s been a sweet, hard season. I was getting pret It’s been a sweet, hard season. I was getting pretty burnt out on homeschooling right before the holiday break, possibly the most burnt out I’ve ever felt with it. But we came back to it this week feeling a little more refreshed and with better systems in place, and it has gone really well. I can be pretty hard on myself, and am still trying to operate like I have 3 kids, when in reality I probably need to talk to some bigger homeschool families and reassess my expectations. I feel like we crossed a line into “big family homeschooling”, and it’s definitely different than how I grew up with 3 kids close in age. But we’re hanging in there, and this last semester really did go quite well. We accomplished a lot and the boys made great progress in many areas.
Has anyone else been at this point with homeschooling, and what did you adjust?

Enjoying the last of summer with my kiddos before Enjoying the last of summer with my kiddos before we go back to homeschool. We made it to one of my favorite places, #ferncanyon.
I’m glad I could do it at 34 weeks pregnant, as I’m definitely not feeling very athletic at the moment. We didn’t go in quite as deep, and I was grateful to have some help getting my toddler over logs.
We had such a great visit with family and longtime friends!
Now back to the reality that the school year is fast approaching. Summer is always such a needed break for me as a homeschool mom. More time for rest and creativity.

Favorite homeschool field trip to date!! Sailing o Favorite homeschool field trip to date!!
Sailing on the SF bay is something I’ve wanted to do for years. @callofthesea made it so fun for everyone. The kids studied marine mammals, took turns steering the boat, helped set the sails, took a water sample and studied plankton under a microscope, and practiced tying knots. Sailing right by the Golden Gate was such a treat!
